December Thoughts
This is it. The last 31 days of the year. Believe me, I know we aren’t living in some version of Freaky Friday where everything will magically reverse at the stroke of midnight. But I also know that it’s up to me to choose how I spend the last month of the year, how I choose to set myself up with some goals and a vision for 2021. We’ve had one hell (and I mean hell) of a year. Amidst the darkness, though, there have been tiny rays of light. I have come to discover that there is so much outside of my control, and as a Type A control freak, that was a difficult discovery to come to terms with, especially in such an abrupt and extreme way. Early on in our springtime quarantine I took to listening to whatever podcasts I could find that would help me feel more optimistic, or at least less isolated and hopeless about our current global situation. I stumbled upon an episode of The School of Greatness podcast all about relationships during isolation, and it left me with a quote that I quickly jotted down and have revisited over and over throughout the remainder of the year. I want you to write it down too: “Let me become incredibly committed to working within my control.” - DeVon Franklin
Working within my control. That is all I can do. But I can do it with incredible commitment. I want to keep this at the forefront of my mind for the last of 2020 and as I blaze a trail into 2021.
So with that in mind, I want to ask what you want to do with your last 31 days of the year. Can you spend them doing something for yourself? Is there something you’ve been wanting to learn? Something new you’ve been dying to try? An old habit you’ve been wanting to kick? Do you have a health goal? A financial goal? A relationship goal? Because with so much that is out of our control right now you can choose to commit to something that you have control over. It doesn’t have to be big and life altering, it can be one small, incremental step towards your bigger picture. Drink more water. FaceTime a friend every day. Donate to a charity. Whatever it may be for you, become incredibly committed to working within your control.
Enjoy the month, hug your family, slow down, and be grateful. XO
