Five Podcasts for Personal Development
As a mom on a mission to level up in her life, I am constantly looking for ways to change the game. As I’ve previously mentioned here, I’m a huge fan of personal development, especially in the form of podcasts. Over the past few months I’ve really committed to listening to a podcast in place of having Netflix on in the background of life. I find that even after something as short as a 20 minute episode I feel more clear about my vision for myself, my family and my community. And when I feel better about myself, I show up better for everyone else. Sometimes they are just for fun and easy listening (It’s Happening with Snooki and Joey is my guiltiest guilty pleasure), but there are a few that I subscribe to religiously and make a habit of tuning in to on a weekly basis.
Hol:Fit Talks
Ange Peters is one of the most inspirational and influential leaders I follow. She is the founder of Hol:Fit, a Canadian founder with doTERRA, a holistic nutritionist, a fitness trainer, a mom, an all around powerhouse. Her podcast, Hol Fit Talks, never disappoints. She is all about owning your vision, creating the life you love, and “living your legacy”. She discusses topics from how to run your own business, to health routines, to goal setting - nothing is off limits. I always feel unstoppable after I’ve listened to one of her episodes, and I’ve even listened to a number of them more than once. If you’re looking to feel motivated to live your very best life, start here with Ange.
First Name Basis
First Name Basis is new to my roster, but it’s been an invaluable resource for my own education on inclusivity, race, religion, and culture. Jasmine Bradshaw provides tools and strategies for listeners to use in their own homes so they feel comfortable having conversations that are imperative for raising thoughtful and inclusive kids. The episodes are short (most are 20 minutes or less) and provide valuable insights that are easy to put into practice. Topics include how to talk to young children about race, how to avoid cultural appropriation, what is ‘cancel culture’, just to name a few. Even if you don’t have children in your life, I highly recommend this podcast for your own personal development.
The Jamie Scrimgeour Podcast
Jamie Scrimgeour is a mom of 1, stepmom of 3, married to a man 14 years older than her. She is my kindred spirit. After reaching the realization that support for struggling stepmoms simply didn’t exist in the online world, Jamie created it. Her weekly podcast is not just about strategies and mindset shifts for the stressors that come with blended family life, but includes tons of takeaways for women that just want to live a kick-ass life. And if you want even more from Jamie her blog and Instagram offer a raw and real glimpse into her life.
The Joyous Health Podcast
This podcast is hosted by the husband and wife team behind Joyous Health - Walker Jordan and Joy McCarthy. They are passionate about sharing content all about healthy living, whether it’s discussing superfoods, clean beauty and personal care products, or self-care in all its forms. They interview experts and practitioners in different fields of the health community and provide listeners with easy ways to integrate healthy living into their own homes. Their guests often have podcasts and platforms of their own that have been excellent additions to my own library.
Armchair Expert
Dax Shepard and Monica Padman host this wonderfully charming and endlessly intriguing podcast all about the “messiness of being human”. At first glance, a two-hour episode seems like a daunting task to undertake. But Monica and Dax have this way of drawing you right into the conversation, asking all the right questions and opening up an amazing dialogue with their impressive roster of guests. I especially enjoy the Experts on Expert series, where they interview journalists, politicians, scientists, professors, and CEOs, about every topic imaginable. To say I’ve learned a lot about subjects I never knew I needed in my life is an understatement. And as a bonus, Monica and Dax are hilarious together and separately.
There are many more podcasts that I’ve dabbled in, but these 5 are the tried and true series that make me feel like a better version of myself. We could all use more uplifting voices in our days, so if you have a podcast that inspires you please comment and share! Who makes you feel empowered to be the best you?
